Recommended Books

Over the years I have read a lot of books. These are books that I have personally read, re-read, or listened to on audio book since starting Canoosa Finance and recommend to you. The books are organized alphabetically by book title, and for your convenience I have included the topics the books cover. You will see that the list does not contain only finance books. Finances tend to run right through life and are intertwined with other aspects of life. We need to change the way we think in order to change our lives and our finances. You will also find books on topics such as communication, relationships, and leadership because we need to work with other people.

This list also serves as an informal bibliography for me. I do my best to cite books when I know that I am writing something that comes from a book. The challenge, though, is that these books have “rubbed off on me” and they have influenced how I think in ways that I may not be conscious of as I live my life and write.

* Indicates a highly recommended book.

(MBA) Indicates one of the 12 books Ben Meer recommends to give yourself 90% of the knowledge of an MBA.

The 4-Hour Work Week – Tim Ferriss*

Topics: Psychology / Work / Lifestyle

Why should we spend 40 hours doing what can be done in 4 hours – and from anywhere in the world? I really like the concept of having mini-retirements instead of one big retirement. Tim has done so many different things in his life and he encourages us to do the same! In the 4-Hour Work Week Tim lays out a plan for anybody to join the New Rich.

The 5 Second Rule – Mel Robbins*

Topics: Psychology / Starting

I was not expecting this book to have the impact that it did! The simplicity of 5-4-3-2-1-Go does not seem like it would do much, but it is enough to distract our mind long enough to get us going. Once we are in motion it is much easier to stay in motion. This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to change something in their life.

The 7 Day Mental Diet – Emmet Fox

Topics: Positive Thinking

This pamphlet was written in 1935 – when the Great Depression was still happening. His approach is to think positive thoughts and not allow the negative thoughts to stay in your head, or to dwell on them. The challenge that he gives is to go for 7 days in this manner. If we should fail, we should wait a couple of days, then start again. The most interesting part – we can’t tell anyone that we are about to do it, or that we are currently doing this diet!

7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Stephen R. Covey*

Topics: Self-Improvement / Effectiveness

In this book Covey discusses topics such as sharpening the saw, win-win, putting first things first, and seeking to be understood. This is a highly recommended book with principles that can be applied to you personal life, work life, or in social settings. For those who would like to take their life to the next level, this is a book for you!

The 12 Week Year – Brian P. Moran

Topics: Productivity

The premise of the book is that if we set weekly goals instead of monthly goals, we can achieve more. He covers things like the lack of drive if we find that we are not going to meet our annual goals. With a shorter time frame, we can get ourselves back on track easier and quicker. This is a brilliant productivity hack!

The 21 Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires – Brian Tracy

Topics: Mindset / Success / Business

This short, easy to read book is the compiled list of 21 concepts that millionaires used to achieve success in their lives. These rules worked for Brian Tracy, and they can work for you, too. As he says, success is predictable. Learn the habits of successful people, and you can become successful.

22 Immutable Laws of Marketing – Al Ries (MBA)

Topics: Business / Marketing

I enjoyed this book on marketing. While some of the content in the book are a bit dated, the principles still apply and can be effectively used. The author takes a look at marketing that is very different from what a lot of companies do. You can apply the concepts presented in this book in your life… even if you are not a marketer!

The 24-Hour Turn-Around – Jim Hartness & Neil Eskelin

Topics: Personal Development / Psychology / Success

Instead of chapters, this book is divided into 24 hours. The authors walk us through 24 areas of our life where we can make changes that will make the big impacts on our personal and professional lives. The topics range from revaluing our self-worth, adjusting our attitude, making the most of our money, and having the attitude of a servant.

The 48 Laws of Power – Robert Greene

Topics: Power Dynamics

This book has been banned in US federal and state prisons, having been deemed a security threat. Power, in and of itself, is neither good nor bad; it’s merely a tool. It’s the intention behind it that determines its character (and its consequences). While some of these laws can be used to the degree you choose to apply them, it is also helpful to understand power dynamics so we can see if they are being used against us.

A Better Way to Live – Og Mandino

Topics: Success / Self-Improvement

Og tells some of his life story in this easy-to-read book of his. While he has written many excellent books on success, he was not always a success. In fact, a one point in his life he could have been called a loser and a bum. In this book he shares the rules he used to turn his life around. You can use these rules to improve your life as well!

ABCs of Getting Out of Debt – Garrett Sutton, Esq.

Topics: Debt / Credit

This book is in Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad series and does a great job at covering the topic of debt and credit. Not only does the book talk about the benefits and drawbacks, but he also covers how to build good credit and how to get out of negative debt and credit situations. I’d recommend this book to everyone – not just those who are having financial trouble.

Acres of Diamonds – Russell Conwell

Topics: Psychology / Money

This short book is an easy read. The starting point for the book is the story about a farmer who goes exploring for diamonds. This farmer was a wealthy man until he learned about diamonds. Russell Conwell’s message is that instead of searching for riches in far off places, we should look around us and we may just discover that we are already surrounded by acres of diamonds! There are also several stories from Russell Conwell’s life from his time in the army during the Civil War to his building up his church and Temple University.

What amazing thoughts that are shared in this book! This book is a collection of what Naval has said in interviews and on X (formerly Twitter). Naval is definitely a deep thinker, and I agree with his view of life, money, business, happiness, and relationships.

Antifragile – Nassim Nicholas Taleb*

Topics: Durability / Optionality / Thriving / Volatility

Nassim is the guy who coined the word antifragile to describe something that improves from volatility or harm. There are so many great topics in this book from optionality (having options available) to noise vs information to improving by taking away. My mind was definitely stretched while reading this book, and I learned a bunch of new words. He put into words how we can think and act so that we can benefit from adversity and chaos in our lives.

The Art of Money Getting – PT Barnum

PT Barnum, the showman and founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, wrote a book about building wealth in 1880. The principles he wrote about are just as applicable today as they were when the book was written.

The Art of the Deal – Donald J. Trump with Tony Schwartz

Topics: Business / Dealing / Real Estate

An interesting look into Donald Trump’s mind. He talks candidly about how he worked his real estate and business deals. One of the big things that he aims to do with all his deals is to minimize the downside while maximizing the upside. He also emphasized that he prefers to do his own due diligence. Love him or hate him, Trump has done some pretty amazing things business-wise.

The Art of Spending Money – Morgan Housel*

Topics: Money / Psychology

Morgan Housel does a great job of covering our relationship with money. He starts the book with the premise that “All behavior makes sense with enough information.” People do try to do dumb things… Those things may just not make sense to us based on what we know. In the book, he also covers how to make ourselves miserable, because it is easier to know that than to know what makes up happy. Then, we can avoid the things that cause us misery. This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to improve their financial mindset.

The Art of Thinking Clearly – Rolf Dobelli

If you would like to learn more about how our brains work (or don’t work!) this is a book for you to read.

As A Man Thinketh – James Allen

Topics: Psychology / Mindset / Success

One of the earlier books on mindset and self-improvement. James writes about how important our thoughts are. We tend to get what we think about. Also, the words we use have a profound effect on us. In the third section of the book, he covers how the people around us affect us, and how we can affect those around us. This is a good book to read if you would like to work on your attitude.

Be Your Future Self Now – Dr. Benjamin Hardy*

Topics: Psychology / Mindset / Success

This book is clearly laid out in a way that will help you become the person you want to be! Dr. Benjamin Hardy starts off by discussing threats to your future self. He then moves on to truths about your future self. In the third and final part of the book he lays out the steps we can take for being your future self. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be more than they currently are.

Being In Balance – Dr. Wayne Dyer

Topics: Mindset / Law of Attraction

A great book about how to apply the law of attraction in our lives. He discusses how everything is energy with a vibration to it. What we send out from ourselves is what we get back, and we can only send out what we have in ourselves. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to have more balance in their life.

Boundaries – Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend*

Topics: Relationships / Psychology

This is an excellent book! While this is not a book that directly talks about money, it helps us learn how and when to say yes, and when to say no. It really made sense to me the way they explain that boundaries in our life are like property boundaries. There are things in our life that we are responsible for, and things that others are responsible for. When we establish strong boundaries in our life we can take control of our life.

Brain Energy – Christopher Palmer

Topics: Health / Mental Health / Metabolism

In this book, Christopher Palmer presents his concept of Brain Energy. The common link between mental health disorders is a person’s metabolism and mitochondria. If we do not have good mental health, it can be more challenging for us to manage and enjoy our money. For those with severe mental health disorders, it is recommended to apply the recommendations under the care of a professional. With that said, it is very interesting to see that our diet can have such an impact on our brain and our mental health.

Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself – Dr. Joe Dispenza

Topics: Psychology / Self-Perception

If you want to break the habit of being yourself, this book shows you exactly how. Dr. Joe Dispenza unpacks why we think, feel, and act the way we do—and reveals how the mind and body conspire to keep us trapped in old patterns. He then walks you through rewiring your brain to build a new version of yourself. Grounded in neuroscience and psychology, this book offers practical ways to create real change. This is an essential read for anyone wanting to break free from old patterns and start living the life they want.

Building A Story Brand – Donald Miller

Topics: Business / Marketing / Communication

For those who would like to get your business going, this is the book for you. If you are trying to be the hero, this book is for you.

Built to Last – Jim Collins & Jerry I. Porras*

Topics: Business / Leadership / Success

While this book was written first, it is recommended that this book be read after reading Good to Great. A great book by Jim Collins about what makes a visionary company (or person) a true visionary. They base their business on core principles, systems, and build a cult-like company culture. A powerful book about how to build a company that is different than most, and as the title suggests – built to last.

Business of Belief – Tom Asacker

Topics: Changing Beliefs / Psychology

I like the analogy Tom of crossing a bridge to describe change. Sometimes the bridge can be small and sturdy, other times it can be a scary, rickety bridge. We like to be encouraged to change, not pushed. That is why we prefer to shop instead of being sold. This is a good book about changing our beliefs in order to change our lives.

Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins*

Topics – Habits / Mentality / Persistence

David Goggins claims that he should not have been able to accomplish the things he has. As a retired Navy SEAL, ultimate marathon runner, and pull-up record holder, he achieved them more through persistence and mental toughness than natural talent. This is an inspirational book about toughening up, overcoming failure, and pushing through. If you want to become uncommon amongst the uncommon, this book is one for you to read.

The Cash Flow Quadrant – Robert Kiyosaki

Topics: Money / Psychology

Cash Flow Quadrant is the follow-up book to Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Kiyosaki goes into further detail talking about the four different quadrants people earn money from. Dopamine Nation – Anna Lembke, MD.

We have become a nation of people that are so driven by feeling good. An interesting point that she makes in her book is that when we introduce pain into our lives, we can receive pleasure form it. This is a great book about addiction, psychology, and emotional things that we go through.

Ecclesiastes is called one of the books of wisdom in the Bible. There are many oft-quoted verses in this book. To everything there is a time, and to every time there is a season. Vanity is talked about a lot in the book. “Fear (or respect) God, and keep His commandments… for God shall bring all works into judgement.” This statement is the same thought as the principle of Karma.

The concept of Essentialism is similar to minimalism, although it has the added element of focus. Greg writes about “Less but better”. Learn how to say no to the good opportunities in life so we can pursue the great opportunities. The Evolution of Everything – Matt Ridley

Topics: Development of Ideas, Things, & Society

I found this to be an interesting book. Matt Ridley does a good job of explaining how things evolve from the bottom up, not the top down. Ideas and inventions don’t magically happen – it is more like two ideas get together and the new idea is their offspring. He makes the argument that evolution can be seen in various aspects of life including the economy, language, money, government, technology, education, and culture.

Existential Kink – Carolyn Elliott

Topics: Psychology / Shadow Work / Empowerment

Yes, this book has an unusual title! I found the book very interesting to read in that Carolyn writes about how we get what we love – and we may very well love the kinky, forbidden things that we have in our life. We may say that we want to be rich, but we get a certain pleasure from just getting by! When we can accept that we have a fetish for this, we can then determine if we want to keep enjoying it, or set it free and move on.

Extreme Ownership – Jocko Willink & Leif Babin

Topics: Taking Responsibility / Success

An excellent book written by two former Navy SEALs. In this book they discuss how taking ownership of what is happening makes for growth, success, and stronger teams. The attitude of the fishmongers can make any workplace much better!

Flip the Script – Oren Klaff

Topics: Sales / Influence

Oren has a great, refreshing take on making a sale (or any other situation where you want to sway their opinion). Instead of trying to coerce the other person, he recommends using what he calls “pre-wired ideas”. When we flip the script and present things in a way that the other person aligns with and understands, it becomes their idea to work with us. I like that he also encourages us to stick to our guns by being authentic and holding to our values.

Flow – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Topics: Optimal Experience / Psychology

This is a great book that covers how we can have optimal experiences. Some people in their studies were able to turn jobs that most people found boring into jobs that were done exceptionally well. When we enter a state of flow, time can be transformed in a way that hours can pass in what seems like minutes, and minutes can stretch out much longer. Read this book if you want to increase the experiences in your life that just flow.

The Four Agreements – Don Miguel Ruiz*

Topics: Self-Improvement / Wisdom

A great book written to share Toltec wisdom about changing our limiting beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. I appreciated the way he talked about people being domesticated. The first agreement is being impeccable with our word. Then, he moves on to not taking anything personally. Not making assumptions is next. The final agreement is to always do your best. He states that we should not try to do more or less than our best – only our best! I highly recommend this book for you.

Yes, the title of the book is short for Fuck You Money! Dan Lok discusses what it takes to make enough money that you can tell your boss to give your job to someone else so that you can have the freedom to do what you want, where you want, and with who you want. His book is thought-provoking.
